Evidence from a recent Lancet Impact of Midwives study says that midwives who are educated and regulated to international standards can provide 87% of essential care needs for women and new-borns. Universal midwifery coverage by 2035 would avert 67% of maternal deaths, 64% of new-born deaths, 65% of stillbirths and would save an estimated 4.3 million lives per year by 2035.
