SWANIRBHAR – Building Agency & Skills for Adolescent Girls
SWANIRBHAR is an initiative undertaken by Centre for Catalyzing Change to demonstrate a model of integrating livelihood generation options with life skills education. This project is implemented in two districts of Bihar, – Bhojpur and Rohtas and is supported by Ford Foundation. Centre for Catalyzing Change aims to leverage existing livelihood generation schemes of various departments of Government of Bihar, for example, Department of SC/ST Welfare, to increase livelihood opportunities for adolescent girls. The aim of the SWANIRBHAR project is to promote a comprehensive adolescent life skills and livelihoods approach that goes beyond employment alone to help adolescent girls gain access to a means of living, including the development of capacities, building their own assets and resources and creating opportunities for economic security. The focus is to increase opportunities for adolescent girls and to enhance their choices with regard empowerment and life choices around fertility, education, reproductive health, employment and or livelihoods and civic participation. SWANIRBHAR reaches out of school adolescent girls, irrespective of their marital status, between age group of 13 to 18 years. More than 550 out of school adolescent girls (married and unmarried) have benefitted from this program.
